The cost of Physical Therapy
People who are seeking PT often ask the question, how much is my treatment going to cost?
This question is often a difficult one to answer as there are many different variables that determine the final line. Some of these include the severity of the injury, the commitment to the program, the overall health of a person. When it comes time to select a PT, individuals often look to a place that accepts their insurance as they think it will save them money, after all they pay a premium for their policy and it should be good care. The reality unfortunately is that often the care you get at an in network clinic is average at best. You will spend about 30 minutes during an evaluation with the physical therapist and often be handed off to a rehab tech or aide to assist you with your exercises. The subsequent sessions you will be lucky if you get 15 minutes with the therapist, and again you will either be left alone to do your exercises or be handed off to a minimally trained rehab tech. I know this because I used to work at a clinic like this. It bothered me that my clients were not given enough time on my schedule to be able to spend 30-45 minutes with them to ensure that they knew exactly what they had to do and that they could be properly supervised. That is why I started this company to be able to provide a service and product that you the patient/client deserve.
Some Calculations:
If you decide to go in network you will probably be given a script to go 3 times per week for 4 weeks. If you do the math that is 3 sessions x15 minutes of the therapist time=45 minutes per week you are with the PT. 45 minutes x4 weeks =180 minutes of the therapist’s time. Now lets talk finances if you have a 30 dollar copay per visit then you are looking at 30x3 visits per week which is 90 dollars. Multiply that by 4 weeks and you get 360 dollars. $360 for 180 minutes, this comes to 2 dollars a minute plus the added cost of gas and time to go to the clinic, not to mention unnecessary exposure to other people during COVID-19. When you look at the cost of paying cash for services it comes to $701/180 minutes of treatment which is $3.80/minute of treatment without the hassle of going to a clinic paying for gas and opening up yourself to exposure. Additionally, this cost be lowered by doing a combination of tele-health and in person sessions. So if you were to do 2 in person and 5 tele-health it would come to $420/ 180 minutes which would equal $2.33 per minute again without the cost of traveling to a clinic and unnecessary exposure. Basically the point of all this math is to say that a better quality treatment is available to you and the cost is not prohibitive. The added benefit of our model is that because your care is focused we have found that fewer sessions are required which in the long run also saves you the client, time and money.
Can I be reimbursed for paying out of pocket for PT services?
This depends on your insurance policy. The first thing that you need to find out is if you have out of network benefits. If you do, you may be able to collect reimbursement for the out of pocket expense. The next thing you would need to look into is if you have met your deductible for out of network services. If your deductible was met then you will likely be reimbursed for the expenses when you submit. If you have not met your deductible then your out of pocket expenses will count towards your deductible when submitting to your insurance company. If you do not have out of network benefits then you will likely not be able collect reimbursement for your out of pocket expenses.
