Hip Conditions

Bursitis: Greater Trochanteric

  • A common condition where the bursa(protective cushioning pad) of the hip becomes irritated. This may be due to a direct trauma to the hip or more often due to imbalances in the musculature that is causing a mechanical irritation of the bursa. Physical therapy is usually prescribed to balance out the imbalance and improve strength and flexibility in areas that are lacking it.

Tendonitis

  • Another common condition where one of the tendons of the muscles of the hip becomes inflamed and irritated. This often causes pain with movement. Treatment is often exercises and manual techniques to calm the irritation and improve the strength of the affected muscle and the surrounding muscles.

Fermoral Acetabular Impingement(FAI) Syndrome

  • Painful condition of pinching of the hip in the socket. The front of the hip catches on the lip of the socket(acetabulum) limiting motion and causing pain. Physical therapy mobilizes the hip to reduce the impingement and educates the patient on corrective exercises, stretches, and activities to improve the mechanics of the hip.

Post surgical

Hip Replacements

  • There are two approaches that occur when a hip is replaced: anterior and posterolateral.

    • Anterior approach: shorter recovery and fewer precautions following the surgery.

    • Posterolateral approach: increased healing time required for muscle incision to heal. Precautions in place to protect hip and reduce risk of dislocation during early recovery.

  • Physical therapy improves ROM, strength, function, improves gait pattern, balance and endurance.

Labral repairs

  • Damage can occur to the labrum that requires surgery to fix. It is performed arthroscopically and the damaged tissue is removed or repaired with anchors. Crutches may be prescribed for 4-6 weeks and ROM is usually limited to protect the surgical site. Physical therapy improves ROM gradually with the use of a surgical protocol and assists in a return to function and athletic activity.
